Finally, I’m able to send out of sign of live again. It’s about bloody time but it will only be a short one. I’ve been busy, sick and abroad and now I'm leaving again. Tomorrow I go to Japan for 3 weeks. I was planning to go somewhere else but things turned out differently. Maybe for the best, who knows. I'm really looking forward to it. Maybe I can get my hands on some precious vinyl. Who knows.

Apart from that, something scared the shit out of me. I received my very first Blogger DMCA takedown notification. A post of mine was set on hold until I remove the shameful content. One thing they didn't tell me was what that shameful content was that was alleged to infringe upon the copyrights of others. Have to take a closer look on that one.

I don't Like Xmas

I’m a bit late but mediafire was experiencing some difficulties yesterday so I couldn’t upload. What I had in mind was a special Xmas gift.
I’m working on a new blog with an overview of Belgian (pop)music worth listening to, also by others who don’t speak any of the local lingo’s. It’s taking me a lot of time and effort, more than I thought it would take, but in the course of doing so, I’m discovering a lot of interesting music I never heard before.
I prepared a kind of best of compilation by Telex, the 80’s synth-popband with Marc Moulin. If you don’t know them, you can picture them as being something in between the Yellow Magic Orchestra and Sparks but then again something totally original and typically Belgian. It’s hard to describe why. maybe it’s easier the other way round. Listening to Telex can give one an insight in what it’s like to be Belgian.

Cherry Blossoms are still far away in November

Akira Ifukube - Nocturne from The Japanese Rhapsody - Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra & Ryusuke Numajiri

A bunch of friends of mine are making plans to go to Japan together next year and I feel tempted to go along but I already made plans to go to Syria around my birthday. The reason they go is Hanami. Each year in March and April they have a festival in Japan called Hanami (花見) which literally translated means ‘looking at flowers’.
The Sakura or Cherry Blossom flowers only for a short while which over time became a symbol for the fragility and the passing of life itself. The peak of this flowering happens every year at a different moment. In this time of year The TV networks devote a large part of the weather forecast predicting the moment of flowering which is a signal for most Japanese people to go outside for a picnic and enjoy the cherry blossoms and oh yes, a large amount of booze as well.
It's suppose to be the best moment to see Japan. I will skip this time and wait for another more appropriate opportunity. I’m really looking forward to go back to Syria.

This piece of music comes from a CD called Japanese Orchestral Favourites which offers a wide variety of western oriented orchestral music from a number of Japanese composers. I especially liked this nocturne which it’s sad folk-song like theme and extensive viola solos.

Natalie Imbruglia – Want
I’m not really a fan of Imbruglia but I can’t get this song out of my head. It’s the first single of a new album and it’s co-written by Cold Martin. It’s not really a great song, a beat and a dance chorus but it’s catchy as hell. So if you want to know what's buggin’ me lately, don’t ask.

Automat - Droid 1978
Retro Grade - Zoid (12 inch mix)
Early instrumental electronic music from Italy, totally built on synthesized sounds and rhythms, it's in the same rank as contemporary works by Kraftwerk, Morodor and Jean Michel Jarre, whose Oxygene was recorded in the same period and released just a few months before this. Automat was a music collective consisting of Romano Musumarra and Claudio Gizzi with Sound Engineer Luciano Torani. The main track Automat on the A side was made by Claudio Gizzi. The B side with three shorter tracks by Musumarra with sounds programmed by Mario Maggi using the "MCS 70" (Memory Controlled Sythesizer). One of these, Droid, was a leading theme on the brazilian Globo TV.
There are a lot of remakes of this song, mainly old Italian versions like Hypnosis. Zoid is a recent remake by Retro Grade. An album project by Serge Santiago and Tom Neville from the UK aiming to create a modern day take on Italo Disco. Just as on their first single MODA they take inspiration from that period between disco and house - the grey zone where synths were first used with disco and when drum machines were used to keep a track in time.

Essa Una Semana Calor

I’ve just spend a superbly hot ridden sun overloaded week in Sevilla. One word: Heatwave. I left Brussels behind with a meager 2 degrees Celsius to find myself a couple hours later getting struck with 36 degrees, in the shade smack in the face :)

Yours truly feels brand new and fully operational with batteries included this time. So time for an update with another full workout.

I’m working on another system for previews and downloads on this site. It seems that the old system doesn’t work anymore or at least not as I want it to. Whenever I try to paste in a name tagged link, the complete layout changes and everything becomes unmanageable.

Instead of separate links, I now just ad one link every month to a map named after that month where all the goodies are collected and updated. This way is also easier for me. It takes less precious time which I now can devote to exploring more music and to written side dishes.

24 Carat black – Poverty's Paradise 1973
Second track from an heavily sampled rare groove classic called Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth. Their only one unfortunately. It’s such a versatile and very diverse record. A concept album. Subject: the state of black life in the ghetto in the seventies. A topic and a musical translation which deserves a proper listening instead of mere groove diggin’.

Telex – I don't like music + Alec Mansion – Trop Triste 1982
There’s a Telex link in here. A local band produced by Dan Lacksman who later reappeared as Leopold Nord et Vous with C’est l’amour which sold millions of copies in France and Belgium. One of my favorite oldies. I can’t remember having seen this video clip back then but it’s a nice one.

Au Revoire Simone – Sad Song / Shadows
One of the great concert I’ve seen recently at Le Bota. It was the fourth time that they came to Brussels and they like coming back. A swell show. They sound way better live than on their records. Sometimes the production sounds rather bleak. None of that with the great sound at Le Botanique.

The Fiery Furnaces – Even In The Rain / 'm Going Away / The End Is Near
Another recent concert at Trix. Second time round. This time there weren’t too many people paying a visit. they have a nice new album. More straightforward. A real piety this time was the fact that they left their piano at home. Instead everything got smothered with heavy distorted guitar which killed the dynamics of the songs.

BLK JKS – Lakeside / Molalatladi
Or The Black Jacks. A new band from South Africa that I’m starting to discover. They’re coming to my hometown in December. Reminds me of TV on The Radio set in an African context.

Norah Jones – Chasing Pirates
New Norah Jones song. I couldn’t hear the lyrics well at first and thought the main line runs like ‘My mind’s racing from chasing heartaches’ which sounded nice to me but it’s actually about real live action pirates. Besides that. Am I the only person who thinks ‘Miss You’ from The Rolling Stones after hearing this song?

Wave classic from Wave Klassix Volume 3. Don’t know much about this band. Reminds me a bit of Siouxie.

Ganzheit – Marvelous / Independence 1986
I learned about this band through Saltyka And His Friends. A strange unknown band from the UK who made their hard edged ebnergetic proto acid house meets electronic body music in the late 80's. It sounds familiar, like Front 242, very industrial.
They never made an album only a couple of maxi’s.Marvelous but especially Independence are my favorite tracks. It’s sounds like EBM but then again it’s so much more. A mesmerizing hybrid.

Monsters Of Folk - The Sandman, The Brakeman And Me
It seems that supergroups are back, at least in the States. First The Gutter Twins, after that Them Crooked Vultures or Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones and now Jim James from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward all together in one band.
What does it sound like? 4 of the most well know and versatile representatives of the folk revival working together makes one think about the Traveling Wilburys and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Well, they’re not that great… but that’s of course asking too much, but boy am I glad that when they met while touring they didn’t stick to playing carts to kill time, but made a couple of songs instead. It took them some years to finally lay them down. You can hear well who made which song but the beauty is in the novel combinations. The interplay of instruments, styles and voices. One of my favorite albums this year.

It seems like Beth Ditto is everywhere these days. Sorry for the cheap joke but given her constitution that shouldn’t be too strange.

Rudy – Just Take My Body / White Room 1979
Rudy was the first name of Rudy Trevesi, a multi talented instrumentalist and vocalist from

Italy

. This solo-effort, released by Polydor in 1979, was produced by Jacques Fred Petrus and Mauro Malavasi with whom he worked extensively throughout his career on projects like the Peter Jacques Band, Macho and Revanche. The album Just take my body was his only solo effort and that makes it somewhat rare and hard to find. The album was recorded in Italy (in Bologna’s Fonoprint Studio's) and mixed in NY (at Power Station). The background vocals were also recorded in NY.
‘White Room’ was a disco remake of the famous Cream song. Jacques Fred Petrus liked the concept of creating disco remakes, as he also put out Macho's I'm a man by the Spencer Davis Group.

September's Here... End of Summer

It falls hard to keep posting on a regular basis. I’m kind of adopting a new lifestyle which involves spending a week abroad every month and it means I have to cramp my work and social life in the remaining 3 weeks. I just spend a week in Prague and in October I’m going to Sevilla. As a result less time for blogging.

Unfortunately/luckily I fell ill in Prague. I’ve got a damn cold again and I’m doing some time indoors dividing my time between my bed and the sofa so I get bored. A good opportunity to post some of the stuff I’ve been collecting for a proper post.

Whenever I fall ill I kinda get nostalgic and start listening to whatever eighties stuff that I have lying around. Davis Sylvian, Heaven 17 und Neue Deutsche Welle as it appears.
What song is better suited than Sylvian’s September from Secrets Of The Beehive. That classic album always reminds me of September. The end of Summer but not really Autumn yet. The time of Indian Summer. The heat is off but those last rays just won’t let go. The nights get longer and colder. The first signs of winter.
The music is acoustically bright and warm but there’s a glance of doom as cold synthesizer sounds color the black backdrop.

I will try to get more active but I can’t force anything. I just do this for fun and I’ve noticed that I’m coming to the end of my Box upload capacity and Blogger is acting strange when using firefox as I presently do. Time to rethink all of it.

Hot Hot Summer Day

One long period of inactivity went over into another and now it’s the middle of summer. A hot summer day seeking shelter with a cool breeze underneath a full moon.

It’s the first time that I skip a whole month. I spend most of my days outdoors. The remaining time classical music and some books kept me company at home while everybody else went far abroad to seek quiet shelter.

Committing myself to lazy holiday inspired inactivities does not mean that I haven’t paid attention to any music going ‘round. On the contrary really. I scored some great compilations and rare grooves. This time some unmixed gay meat horse disco on Strut, plus the ZE Records Story, Balearica 3 with sounds from the white island and an undiscovered deetour EP that some bloggers put together.

I don’t know how live is out there where you plug in, but over here it’s really hot and wet and we like it that way :) summer at last.
It’s Sunday and laidback, maybe to the extreme as it seems because quite a few of people decided to choose the eternal for the temporary or the present for the afterlife. Most notable Michael Jackson. In short, I'm sure his musical legacy is what will last and stand the test of time instead of the freakshow he put on the last couple of years.

We’re also happy to welcome a new album by The Gossip. You can listen to it right here. I already heard a couple of tracks yesterday and they sound diverse, danceable, just simply great. A swell way to get ready for a party and that's what i did. I went to one of the nicest parties this year so far at Recyclart in Brussels. It was their final evening because they’re closing for more than a year. Yet another Los Niños – Fingerspitzengefühl gem with this time Pilooski, Bottin from Italians do it better and Dirty Soundsystem from the great blog Alainfinkielkrautrock. Less Italo this time but enough stuff to get glued to the dancefloor.

La musique d'Issa Sow - Doumale Home Records

As a young Peul sheppard Issa Mbaya Diary Sow (1947 Talbakhlé-Senegal) played the nianiooru or riti, a one snare type of violin with a thin, shallow and melancholic sound. Over the years the now 62 year old musician became a leading performer on the nianiooru and an ambassador for the music of the Peul people. He toured for 16 years with the Orchestre National du Sénégal and played together with Baaba Maal, Malick Pathé Sow and Yousou N’dour.
Since 2000 he lives in Brussels and now he made a CD with his band Malick Pathe Sow (hoddu), Boa Cissokho (kora) and Tom Theuns (gitaar) plus the local violin player and composer Wouter Vandenabeele from Ghent. Vandenaabele plays in many Belgian folk bands but the main ones are Olla Vogala and Ambrozijn. For this production he wrote a string arrangement for a couple of the songs.

This crossover with Western, Indian and Arabian styled strings is nevertheless strongly routed in the Senegalese tradition. It’s a beautiful dialogue of fiddles and violins that cross borders.

It’s a great day. A long weekend, a sunny day and I’ve been around looking for records and stuff and what did I find? A real whopper :) I never thought I would ever find this one but I just did, Manuel Göttsching’s E2-E4 record.
Maybe that doesn’t make a bell ring for many people but it’s just awesome. It supposed to be recorded on one seminal evening in September 1981 after he returned from a tiring tour with Klaus Schulze, who used to be a member in his band Ash Ra Temple, and got first released in 1984 after many people pushed him to do so and it ended up being virtually the blueprint for much of the Techno and Ambient house music afterwards.

It’s still incredible to hear this piece of music as something that’s not brand new but as a record that’s 28 years old. The length of the record is a sign though. Almost 60 minutes. Only Ricardo Villalobos does that these days :)

I made an edit of the first part which is about 13 minutes and it’s called Ruhige Nervosität or quiet nervousness. It pretty much marks the essence of the music.

And now for something completely different, a classical intermezzo. If you’re into ‘old’ music like Italian Baroque you probably have heard about this new young virtuoso from France called Philippe Jaroussky. Apparently he likes some adventure from time to time because now he released an album called Opium with colorful French belle époque chansons that some people may find a bit old fashioned or even corny but in the capable hands of Jaroussky it all sounds fresh and well tempered.

He came to Brussels on the 19th of April to promote the album and the Frenchspeaking classical radio made a recording of it and a broadcast.

It’s a cycle of 4 times 5 songs divided by solo piano and a pause in the middle. I recorded the live streaming and edited it into two parts. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A while back, as you may recall, I made amusing but in some way hurtful remarks about our numerous co-inhabitants of this planet called bacteria. Thanks to Bill Bryson’s bestseller ‘A Short History of Nearly Everything’ I realized just how much we owe to these nifty little creatures.

In the beginning, in the ancient Archaean world going back as far as 3 billion years, the Earth certainly wouldn’t have suited us. If you were to step from a time machine you would very swiftly scamper back inside, for there was no more oxygen to breathe on the Earth back then than there is on Mars today.
It was also full of noxious acid vapours powerful enough to eat through clothing and blister skin. The chemical stew that was the atmosphere back then would have allowed little sunlight to reach the surface. What little you could see would be illumined only briefly by bright and frequent lightning flashes. In short, it was the Earth, but one we wouldn’t recognize as our own.

Anniversaries were few and far between in this Archaean world. For two billion years bacteria were the only forms of life. They lived, they reproduced, they swarmed, but they didn’t show any particular inclination to move to another, more challenging level of existence but at some point in that first billion years of life, cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, learned to tap into a freely and widely available resource called hydrogen and that exists in spectacular abundance in water. They absorbed water molecules, supped on the hydrogen and released the oxygen as waste. In so doing they invented photosynthesis and produced the air we now all breath in.

They laid the foundations for all living things that came after them.

Photosynthesis is ‘undoubtedly the most important single metabolic innovation in the history of life on this planet’ and it was invented by bacteria and not plants.

As cyanobacteria proliferated the world began to fill with oxygen to the consternation of those organisms that found it poisonous, which in those days was all of them. New oxygen-eating organisms had 2 advantages. It’s a more efficient way to produce energy and it vanquished competitors.

So the next time you hear someone say something nasty about bacteria you know what rub them in their face.

I’ve been out en about and abounded this blog for far too long. Shame on me… I’ve been quite occupied spending the greater part of my time working and some spare time partying and catching the first rays of the sun.
But at night I’ve been clubbing to see InFlagranti DJ in Café Capital last weekend and Döpplereffekt play at a music festival in bozar in Brussels which was historic for many reason. The first Belgian gig in their long career and the fact that it was historically… boring. Man, I’ve found a new absolute zero tolerance point of no return for total boredom. 2 dummies doing playback. One could also look at it as some conceptual performance but still it all looks and sounds the same to me. Luckily they had some visuals.
Just before the gig I had a small chat with Stijn. A local pop star deluxe :) he’s a fan of Döpplereffekt and sounds like Döpplereffekt + Sex circa Prince and he was sitting just in front of me on the first row. Turns out that he has ADHD if you ask me. He couldn’t sit still, talking with everybody around him, adding comment to everything. Especially the people passing by. As you might have guessed the Boreffekt was too much for him, so he left.

Another disappointment was The Animal Collective at AB. Nice music on record but not much of a live band. A nice surprise was a guy called Matias Aguayo. He too played at BEMF (Brussels electronic Music Festival). Good thing that I keep this blog ‘cos otherwise I would have forgotten to check him out. That’s what I’m going to do right now.

Since it has been the third birthday of this blog a couple of weeks ago, I should have made the effort of making a special post but thanks, no time. There’s a pretty nifty mix in here somewhere but nah, as almost everytime lately it seems… a random mix of various styles and moods + a nice picture.

Any Resemblance To Real-time Action Figures Is Strictly Coincidental.

Yes, I had my fare share of working and partying the last few weeks. Now I’m chilling down at the crib set on a cocoon mode :) During those weeks music kept me company. For proof see down below.

People always ask me what I do for a living. I usually start by saying I’m an Architect. Then I ad that I no longer devote my life to these fine arts and instead decided to go by the name of 'spatial planner' working freelance for a consultancy firm. If for most people being an architect is already something that’s wrapped in veils of mystery, just imagine what they must feel like when they hear the lather.

Of all creatures great and small, bacteria and consultancy firms are probably the most under appreciated.
Bacteria because they accomplish a very useful task, in contrast with their reputation, certainly when it comes down to cleaning up garbage. I’ve been told this numerous times by a friend who’s a civil engineer - and therefore knows practically everything as long it doesn’t involve the arts, literature, philosophy, history or ethics. Another friend, who’s into ‘deep ecology’ even talks about his ‘friends’, the bacteria. Seriously, I find this to be a bit too familiar. Maybe even farfetched but at the same time I have a slight suspicion that this strange expression of love has its limits though, because I get invited to his parties and his ‘friends the bacteria’ don’t. That doesn’t prevent them from showing up though… the party poopers.
Soit, the use of consultancy firms on the other hand is far less obvious to explain to your average Joe six-pack. I honestly think that it would become crystal clear if all of a sudden they would just all vanish into thin air. I understand that it’s kind of difficult to grasp, I know I do, but let it be clear that the benefits of the very existence of consultancy firms has to be astronomical if this already goes beyond the limits of our understanding.

If on the workfloor or the office one speaks about consultancy firms, even in the most broad and general terms – it has been checked, it’s not yet ready – what one aims to address is something that basically, in its most typical form, is plural. It’s THE consultants who are studying hard and long on what you thought was going to be nothing but a rather practical inconvenience. If THE consultants are poppin’ by for a visit it usually means that two or three of them are coming. For the exact nature of this fully voluntary display of multiple personality, there’s a rather lively debate going on among scientists.

A brief, basic observation on my behalf points out that at least one consultant carries a laptop, connects it to a wall socket, a beamer and maybe even to the net and looking professional and ‘deep’ while the others do the talking.
A second one usually is the project manager who gives an introduction, introducing the firm, himself and expressing special devotion to his colleagues (yes, we can do it, we can pull this one). Nowadays these colleagues no longer carry a surname. It’s either John, Michael or just Pete, sometimes even Mary or Jane. This is meant to create a nice cozy, informal atmosphere, just as long one doesn’t ask questions that are too difficult or too critical.
Now, the third one (that's where I come in) usually is an engineer, an architect maybe even an urban planner or (God forbid) a designer. If it’s an engineer that person will very likely be dressed like your next door neighbour when he comes back from the pub after a quick pint with the lads or when he’s been choppin’ wood in the back garden. Hence the limited amount of Mary’s and Jane’s. If it’s an architect, designer or a planner, that person will very likely be dressed in black. A black pair of trousers and a style that would blend in fine in the more fashionable streets of Milan. Topped by a black roll-cover and Colbert jacket. In that jacket there’s a black stylish mobile phone that will give a manifest token of its existence at least once during the meeting whilst churning out chimes produced by a bunch of overactive papoea’s messin’ around with some electronic beats as part of a political correct sustainable experiment in a distant offshore lab.
This architect, planner or designer usually brings a set of plans or sketches along which, he declares, he didn’t produced himself. It’s actually another colleague who did it but who was unfortunately not able to attend the meeting (definitely not in my case, I produce my own stuff). But since he’s hanging around instead of the other, he will be so kind to try to explain them for you if you don’t mind – once, as an attendee, I tried to state that I did mind, just as a folly… big mistake.

If subsequently questions and comments raise conclusive problems or complications for the project to proceed as planned, the standard formulation is that those remarks will be addressed in the most suitable way and if relevant and significant they will lead to the necessary adjustments at the most suitable stage of the process.
Afterwards, as a rule, one never hears anything about them again. Unless, one reminds the consults of this fact again and again and again. Then, usually what follows is a bill with unasked for but nevertheless necessary extra adjustments of the agreed upon fee or the plain notification that the addressed person involved is no longer an active member of the firm.

Of course, the consultants will take in account all reasonable factors implied. After the finalization of the study and the actual realization of the project it will become clear that most factors at stake were not of a knowable kind or anticipatable nature. If drainage is implied this means practically everything that’s situation underneath the surface. If it concerns roads, tunnels and bridges it almost anything that moves. For buildings it’s both.

All of this will be received and accepted with the utmost profound understanding. After all, if the project wasn’t that risky and complex the client surely would have been able to do it himself. I have some swell music that I would like to share with you. It took a while to get it on these pages because I had no appropriate words or pictures to go along with it. I had nothing special to tell apart from the fact that for a couple of weeks now I’m an official member of facebook. Yes, I wasn’t planning to, but I surrendered. I didn’t or maybe still don’t see the use of it but I got to many ‘friends’ requests on a such short notice to not be bothered with it. It looked like almost everybody took a facebook account during the Christmas holidays. So did I. partly because I was curious to see what’s it all about.

Now after a test phase it still looks strange to me. I get drawn to it but at the same time it feels totally obnoxious. What’s special about this virtual social network is the fact that it has all kinds of features and applications that you can fondle with, but also that all your friends can see or better read what you’re doing with it and what for comments you leave on other peoples homepage. It really feels like eavesdropping and that’s probably the catch, if you ask me.
One is always curious what other people, especially your friends or those who you especially favor (if you know what I mean) are doing, thinking and feeling but at the same time I can’t be bothered with it all the time or with everybody’s ‘signs of life’.

Anyway, I don’t want to spend too much time on it in order to have some time left for other social networks :) like MySpace for instance. I don’t use MySpace to often and certainly not for social networking but as a tool to find new music. To great effect. I made quite a few discoveries. Some of them made it into the spotlight by now but others didn’t (yet).
Like The Rayees for instance or maybe this UK band: The Invisible. I found a couple of articles about this band and their homepage of course. An interesting project which features Leo Taylor who also played drums in Gramme and worked together with Zongamin and Matthew Herbert. No further explanation needed.
The Diaphanoids are a Dutch duo that favor a more relaxed and psychedelic version of italo and electro.
Liron van Daalen is a veteran in the Dutch electronic scene and now he operates under the name of Kabale Und Liebe, beautifully named after a play by Friedrich Schiller (the one from Ode an Die Freude). Richie Hawtin and Magda are fans. If you listen to Childs Play you'll know why.
I’m following Shearwater for a while now and they get better with each new record.
Jerome Brailey is a former P-funk aficionado from who fell from the Mother Ship and kicked back in great style.

I’m always curious to find out what drives these people, what makes them tick. Especially the last few days.

You’re probably wondering, what’s with the Barbie’s? Barbie-Q’s, Barbie-cues,… what’s next?
My big sis’ used to have a Barbie set and I admit, I used to play with those dolls as a kid. A boy playing with a Barbie doll? I know, not very manly but I can ad in my defense that the only thing it did with them was… burn them :)

A shrink can probably give a good explanation what It all means and through the internet and youtube I found out that I 'm not the only boy who liked or likes to burn Barbie’s or any other stuff for that matter.
If one told them that they were actually playing with a Barbie doll they would very likely look at you in utter disbelief, trying to explain that they actually don’t like them, maybe even hate them and would not agree then, but nevertheless. It’s still a kind of play.

At least that’s the way my mind works and my philosophy. If you try to get away from something very badly, you’ll end up next to it. If one tries to get rid of somethin’ or dislikes somethin’ by anxiously doing the opposite you will ultimately end up doing the thing you dislike.
It’s the same with love. The opposite of love is not hate. Don’t be silly. They’re both a form of dedication. Total indifference is the opposite of caring love or hate, whatever.

So maybe all this diverging dislikes and contempt are a good sign? Or maybe that’s what’s so strikingly bold and extremely vulgar about the indifference of the outside world to current dramatic affairs.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, flemish movie directors are like flandriens, our local cyclists. They’re both great at dealing with short term action, be it a short movie or one day rides around the local pub or one day cycle classics like Paris-Roubaix. The problem with them is dealing with long term action like a full feature movie or the Tour de France.

Sure they can win one or two flat trips, but that’s not the same as arriving in the mayo jaune in Paris or strollin' on the red carpet in Cannes like our French speaking brothers and sisters on the Southside do well.

Talking ‘bout the Southside. For me last year’s revelation and talk of the town was Aeroplane. They produced as set of great originals and remixes and they were resident DJ’s at my favourite club. Now they’re off conquering the world and the Make-Up Club switched over to some Japanese juvenile delinquent’s favorite soda pop bubblegum on acid. Or maybe it’s just that I’m getting to old for clubs.

They made a great mix for Residentadvisor but I noticed that it’s currently not available so I uploaded it.

One thing I learned from their sets is a great remake by Riton or Eine kleine Nacht Musik of La Serenissima from Rondò Venziana. They played it almost on every occasion. They must really love that edit and they’re right. I already liked the original and a DNA remix from 1990 but what Riton did with it is just fabulous. Extra strings and bass and some heavenly catchy vocals that work up to a climax. Great electro acoustics just like all the other tracks on his Nacht Musik album.

The Man

Jo Crepain 1950-2008

Last Saturday a man who’s dear and precious to me pasted away much too soon. The architect for whom I worked for years and who became a kind of father figure for many, died from cancer.

I knew he was very ill but it’s still a shock to receive such a news. It’s a big cliché but oh so true that if someone close to you dies you start to give it more of a thought. It simply affects you more.
As much as I appreciate his work, what I will remember and cherish the most was the man himself. His personality and charm, his wit and restless energy.

He did not like to go with a big scream but rather quiet and I’m quite sure he would not have wanted us to mourn to long and instead remember the fun times.

As a tribute a farewell song to lower the curtains and after that the only thing that will rest is his voice as it whispers through his buildings.

It’s the dark cold days before X-mas. I’m a person who really needs a bit of sun to feel happy or at least at ease but right now the sun is as easy to find as easy bank loans and safe shares.
I usually don’t feel very happy then but the last days were pretty awful. Worse than usual. I was very uncomfortable, feeling totally empty, discouraged and dispirited. A broken man.
That’s why I took a day off from work (no mail, no telephone,…) just to relax, to give myself a treat and get back in shape. Catch some extra sleep, drink a awful lot of healthy tasty fruit shakes (like for instance mint+coconut milk+limes+honey), do some sports (went to a new fitness gym for free) and to finish things off, a relaxing chilling stay in a sauna, a hot tub of water and a nice meal. No massage, that would have been too much of the good stuff.

Now I feel all fresh again… tired though, but happily tired. A bit high even or is that the wine I drank? So how do we celebrate this renovation? With music off course.

Nightmoves In Mysterious Ways

Well what can I say? Grace Jones is coming to Brussels in March for a live gig in a small venue. Tickets are costly and above average for the AB (50 euros) so I thought... I could buy me some time, but nope. The show was sold out in just 6 days! Fat chance. It’s the second time I miss one of her shows and it’s quite possible that Sly&Robbie are joining her for what will probably be a very memorable concert. Now I have to look if she’s playing somewhere else within a 300km range from my frontdoor.

If it may be a comfort, I saw a nice small set on Saturday by Zeitgeist from Sweden. They’re usually compaired with the Knife but they’re not that gloomy, introvert and dark. Rather hedonistic and extrovert. They had a very simple but oh so effective lightshow and lots of costumes. Afterwards a DJ from Kitsune took over. Nightmoves made a couple of great remixes on the label but he turns out to be great funky DJ as well. Just check the set he made for Sweeney’s Beatsinspace.

Just look what Santa’s competitor Saint Nicolas brought with him all the way from Spain. I received a load of very charming, adventurous, weird and slightly burned but otherwise wonderful stuff, ready to be shared. It’s been a good year music wise (has there ever been a bad one?). But first of all… a golden Detroit oldie. Still looking for a hardcopy of this oldskool techno classic. Maybe Santa brings one over from The States?

Reel By Real – Surkit 1990 (Peacefrog)

One can find compilations these days collecting music on the most bizarre topics. Take for instance ‘Tea’ or the art of making tea. Teaism is a release on Static Caravan and features at least one outstanding killertrack by Cornel Wilczek, aka Qua, from Melbourne Australia. According to Wikipedia Lapsang Souchong is: a type of xxxtra-strong (and gross) black tea which is meant to taste ‘similar to the smell of a campfire or of Latakia pipe tobacco’ or whatever.

This is what Qua wrote himself about it: ‘This song was inspired by an unexpected finding when experimenting with ice teas. While chilling many different teas, one of my favourite hot teas, Lapsang Souchong, took on a whole new taste when served cold. It has energy and sense of mature fun. I wrote this song for her’.
After hearing the track I’m seriously considering to give it a try. After my trip to Italy I got hooked on Coffee again so I wanna switch back to tea.

I’ve got a big crush for African music and its offspring, whether it's Afro-American, Afro-Cuban or Afro-Brazilian. As a result I have some African records, mostly compilation. I listen quite often to them, but for some raison they never make it to these pages. Finally, I’m able to send out of sign of live again. It’s about time. I’ve been busy and abroad. Next week I’m out of the country again for a short trip to Italy. This time a private holiday. I really need it. Maybe I can get my hands on some italo disco. Who knows.

When there’s a lot of wind I often wonder where the wind would take me if I was just a leave. Probably somewhere in the gutter :)

Not only my mind keeps wondering off. The wind has brought winter, and the first snow in ages. At the same time it seems like everybody around me is or has been wandering off to distant shores. A friend of mine just came back from a long trip to Israel and Jordan, another one is also leaving next week for a long trip to Capo Verde, an yet another half-nomadic friend is killing time in the south of Spain looking for a job and adventure. I’ve just been talking to a new friend, a deer colleague of mine, who’s brother lives and works in Africa, about both doing something similar.

I’ve got a lot of new music as well but because I always work according to the system ‘last in last out’, a lot of it never makes it to these pages. Like for instance a great compilation of Manu Dibango called 1962… Voyage Anthologique and all three Brownswood Bubblers by Gilles Peterson. One of the greatest voices of our time and indeed of any time, has past away. Yma Sumac died last Saturday. I knew she wasn't that young anymore but it's still a not so pleasant suprise.

Jingle Jangle

Things are a bit slow around here lately so that’s why I ‘m trying to deliver two topics at the same time. I’ve been uploading quite a lot of music that I recently gathered around but not everything is ready yet. As often I’ve been busy working but I’ve also been to a lot of concerts. Just right now, this evening, I saw a young band called Those Dancing Days at Trix here in Antwerp. A charming girlsgroup from Sweden where popmusic pours out the watertap it seems and ends up in baby milk. I don’t have another explanation for the amount of pure quality popmusic coming from Sweden.

What did they bring? In Dutch we have a term for this kind of naïve music: rammelpop. It could be translated into rattle, jingle or jangle pop because the rhythms and melodies wander off into many directions but in the end they land back on all fours like a cat. It’s anything but tight but that doesn’t madder. It all adds to the charm and the youthful spirit.

The day before that I saw M83 from France and the local band Yuko but the most fond memories are from a concert a while back by My Brightest Diamond and Clare & The Reasons at Le Botanique in Brussels. It was the second time that I saw My Brightest Diamond live but my first pleasant encounter with Claire & The Reasons. Those Reasons turned out to be the backing band or rather strings for the main act as well. They both came to promote a new album and I bought Claire’s album at the venue because I liked the show and I already have both albums by My Brightest Diamond.

Claire sang a coverversion of Somewhere Over The Rainbow with new lyrics which consisted of only one word: Obama. She said or believes that if you repeat something over and over again it becomes true. How lovely :) If you listen to the music and read this quote I think you get a rather accurate picture of what the concert was like: nice, warm, pleasant and beautiful. And so was My Brightest Diamond but luckily she’s not that soft or daft? :) A bit more balanced and focused. Although she stopped the set a couple of times for short intermezzo’s: some magic tricks involving a black top hat and a rabbit. All good fun and still a great voice and performer. Maybe it’s a pitty that she’s not yet a major artist over here that plays in bigger concert halls but on the other hand it’s much nicer to see her in a small venue real close.

Disko Clone Freak

Even though it’s autumn right now the sun is still our welcome guest and warms our chilled and puzzled hearts after last week’s post. Those dancing days aren’t just quite over yet. What’s more, François Kerkovian is coming to town next weekend.

Apart from that Clone records from Holland released a compilation album of rare classic dance cuts from the eighties. You might have guessed already that I’m a bit of a fan of the label, where else would I dig up a track like Los Angeles TF’s Magical Body? Now a couple of them are gathered together on a nice CD. Maybe more will follow. And what’s more the Great Eskimo from Ghent released Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol.1. No explanation needed. A must have if you ask me.

I didn’t find the time or the will to arrange these tracks in a nice logic order for your all overwhelming aural pleasure because I’m carrying these tracks with me for far too long now. I’ve got to get them out of my system. So enjoy them as they are. Make your own mix in your head.

It’s that time of year again. Everything gets kind of gloomy and cold. Days get shorter and darker. The new yellow pages arrive and signal that old ones can hit the sack or that they can serve a better use drying autumn leaves as in the old schooldays. The first sneeze and cuff get a hold of me as my mind wanders off away from hot summer and disco dancing and into a more melancholic mode and musical setting. The stubru radio program Duyster provides an ideal soundtrack for this mental shift.
Above that came the news that not only Norman Whitfield pasted away but that also Marc Moulin died from cancer. I wrote a couple of times about Marc Moulin on these pages and posted a lot his and related music, time after time, above all his output with Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers as Telex.

Here’s just a short list of my favourite Telex tracks and related stuff. Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers both had their share in creating the Telex sound and they are responsible for more wonderful stuff outside the Telex format. For instance Z-Moor-Z. An incredible Moers vehicle produced by Telex. I’m really glad to be able to offer the Razormaid remix of Héros Dynamique and above all Raised by Snakes, by far one of the best Telex tracks. It’s not on any of the remix albums that they released. Razormaid was a magazine back in the days and a anonymous collective of DJ’s and remixers who produced dozens of outstanding independent remixes in the 80’s. Some of them got released on much sought after compilation albums.

YouTube just recently launched an extra channel called The Screening Room which is totally devoted to quality short movies and real moviemakers instead of the usual omnipresent junk debris of wannabe-popstars, snorkeling monkeys and eye-poppin’ mandrills… whatever.

On this new channel you can watch short movies by famous and not yet famous directors as Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know) and Torill Kove (whose The Danish Poet won the Oscar for best animated short movie last year).

As a result of all this, clips on YouTube are now able to be longer than 10 minutes which is meant to tickle the young and talented to produce some short movies.

If I understood it correctly in the near or distant future it's probably going to be possible to see real complete feature movies on YouTube.

Life Is Just A Song And A Dance

Hi there disco brothers and sisters. The weekend is comin’ to an end and what did it bring me? Laundry Day, Opera, a damn cold and all 6 Episodes of Star Wars … A busy weekend so I didn’t catch much sleep.

Laundry Day on Saturday was good, clean cut fun. A bit cold, so that’s probably where I got this sore throat and nasty cuff from or maybe I got it from Conor Oberst himself :-) Luckily it didn’t rain. At least not when I was there. I left before 10 pm so I had an early night but I wasn’t sleepy yet.
Early that day I suddenly had the urge to watch a Star Wars movie. I ended up looking all 6 of them on the same day, just until dawn. I never saw the 3 new episodes so this was a good occasion to finally do so. I still like the old ones best. Thank god for Han Solo. Harrison Ford really saves those movies but unfortunately there’s no equivalent of that character in the new episodes. I must say that the last episode of the prequel isn’t that bad. It’s pretty dark and fits well with the first episode from 1977.

But enough nerdtalk. Some music now. Cyber-Soul from a young lady called Janelle Monáe. Is she the new Grace Jones? Grace Jones is still alive and kickin’ so probably not. Still, I like what she does. I posted some music a while ago but the links got lost so here we go again.

On Sunday I had some free tickets for a tryout of a new production of Puccini’s Turandot. What better way to chill out on Sunday than a fancy opera, no? Puccini is classic opera but it’s also 20th century music. Turandot was written in the roaring twenties and it has some adventurous melodies and even modern sounds. I like it a lot because of the exotic chinose folks songs and off course for the famous aria Nessun Dorma. It was a pity though that they didn’t play that aria because they only played the first 2 acts as a way of rehearsal. I also don’t know which ending they’re going to use because there are more than one options. Puccini died before he finished it. That’s why they let somebody else write an ending for it based on sketches from Puccini but I don’t think there are a lot of people who find it satisfying. I know I don’t. Berio made another one but I still haven’t heard that one. Maybe I can find one at the library.
From what I’ve heard and can judge, the orchestration was splendid but the singers didn’t really go all the way. Who can blame them. It was a rehearsal but still a bit disappointing. That’s why listened again, afterwards at home, to this live recording I have from 1961.

The Many Sides of Conor Oberst

Out go the summer festivals and… in come the club concerts! Last Wednesday was my first after summer concert gig. For starters I had me a very traditional old fashioned 70’s Dylanesk country rock outfit by rock’s boy genius Conor Oberst aka Bright Eyes. He’s presently touring under his own name with The Mystic Valley Band to promoter his latest album.
It was the first time that I actually saw him play live, even though I’m a fan for quite a while now. I really like his voice but I had my doubts if he could deliver it live. Boy, was I wrong. He was a bit sick, a cold and a nasty cuff, but that didn’t affect his voice. He can really run the shivers down your spine, especially in the more quiet acoustic songs.

Listening back to the record, these versions recorded in a studio somewhere down in Mexico are mere shadows of the live versions.

It took them a couple of songs to get into it, but from then on they did a real effort to make it a swell evening, despite of the rockstar's cold. Maybe because he likes the Botanique club in Brussels (he said so).

The support act was a young indie band from the UK called Sky Larkin. I checked their myspace page and it really sounded great, but live it sounded a bit plain. The balance was not right. Too much guitar and too little voice as it is often the case with young indie bands. They all like to hide behind a wall of noise. But hey, you’ve got to start somewhere.

They’ve made a nice cover of a QOTS song, I Was A Teenage Handmodel, but they didn’t play it, but they played this one.

Hot Buttered Soul 25.000

Mister hot buttered Soul is no longer… one of my favourite voices and songwriters Isaac Hayes has passed away.

Your average biography of Isaac Hayes goes somethin’ like: autodidact piano playing rookie gets a stint at Stax, with his friend Porter he becomes a successful songwriters duo, gets the change to do some solo work, comes up with a couple of classics and his trademark bling bling style, hits it big time with Shaft, makes some more albums in the seventies that gradually contain more and more disco music instead of his hallmark mix of funk, rap and soul which back then and for some people still today means ultimo the end because of the notion of disco as bad commercial music, so he hits rockbottom, starts acting and in the nineties becomes The love crazed down-to-earth Chef in the Southpark episodes until he decides to quit because they mock his then newly adopted rich person’s fiction lifestyle called Scientology and… dies, the end.

Luckily in reality things are more complex than that. Take for instance the disco music he made. Well, if Isaac Hayes decides to play some disco you can be sure it’s no ordinary dancebeat but a richly orchestrated workout like for instance Disco Connection from 1975.

As a person who tries to follow the way of the Buddha through quantum physics and relativity, the completion of the French/Swiss Large Hadron Collider or LHC from CERN is pretty exciting news.

The first tests on the big particle accelerator are set for today and the ‘Big Bang’ is scheduled for 10 September. Luckily there are other likeminded people out there who feel the same ‘thrill’ and adopt a similar attitude towards this event, so if you like to know what it all means just watch this edutaining rap video from CERN.

If everything goes well and the damn expensive machine actually works, we will see if present theories are right or whether we have start from scratch again. Either way, it will be a big important event and what better way to celebrate this than with some music.

Meanwhile, while others were walking down the street with people’s heads, I’ve been watching Michelangelo Antonioni’s classic The Passenger again starring Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider.
A fun asset of DVD reissues are the extras. I watched it with the audio comment of Jack Nicholson giving explanation and background info to the scenes, locations and co-starring actors and Antonioni’s vision. Now I finally know how they did that monumental final shot :-) at least if Jack Nicholson is really telling the truth because his story is pretty mindboggling.

The role Maria Schneider, simply girl (no need for a name but she's studying architecture), plays in the movie gets more confusing and mysteries every time I watch it.

Anyway dEUS made a song about Maria Schneider on their most recent album. I don’t know how the song is related to Maria Schneider’s live but as I recall she vanished for a while, back in the 70’s because she couldn‘t handle the pressure of fame and the impact of that other movie, Last Tango in Paris. Maybe their song, The Architect, apart from a tribute to Buckminster Fuller, is also a tribute to Maria Schneider in The Passenger :-)

I don’t have a TV so people sometimes ask me what I do instead. All sort of stuff, but I do get my visual thrills every once in awhile or have an occasional potato couch moment.
For instance watching funny banned commercials like this one on youtube. I know the Danish and the Swedish people have some things in common. I’m quite sure that Hygge means something to the Swedes as well, but apparently they don’t care that much for Janteloven at the looks of this video. Or maybe only once a year.

Flaming Homers

On my trip to Copenhagen I listened to some random CD’s that I pulled from my collection. Stuff that I haven’t listened to for a long time. It turned out to be a rather traditional soundtrack which suited very well the nice winding green and yellow rural landscapes that I passed while driving.
I normally listen to more modern, electronic and rather advanced stuff but that doesn’t mean that I don’t know or appreciate the classics or the roots where it all comes from. I really like all kinds of traditional folk music from around the world. It’s always good to know and to cherish the originals. It gives one a sense of history and evolution and besides that it’s most of all great music.

After checking out Mediafire I found this alternative to Box called… Boxstr. I like the prelistening feature from snapshots so that you know what you’re downloading but that’s impossible with Mediafire. Boxstr on the other hand, does the trick.

One collection was an all-star band performing songs from the Stephen Foster's All American songbook. Almost everybody knows these tunes or has heard them in one of the many different versions which exist. Both black and white performers and musicians have played and recorded them over the many years. They’re truly traditional songs and because of that I thought for a long time that they belonged to the public domain, meaning that nobody knew who wrote them. I was wrong. I learned that a lot of these tunes were written by one and same person called Stephen Foster in the mid 19th century. Before and during the Civil War.

He was really ahead of his time being an independent songwriter trying to make a living out of purely written music in a time which practically knew no copy write laws but most of all for mixing and transforming the many vulgar rural musical styles of settlers and slaves into popular tunes for the entire nation. They became the soundtrack of an era and gave way to practically all of the present American music. Many call it the trunk of the tree of the Great American songbook. Whether its country, bluegrass, gospel or the blues and rock music. Even classic composers as Charles Ives have been influenced by his music. Many of his songs have the solemn grandeur of hymns but still manage to remain true to their ‘plain folk’ origin. Is not that difficult to make great music if one can stand on the shoulder of such giants.

The last one is the odd one out. Flaming Fle(a)mes is a compilation which the Dutch music magazine OOR made a couple of years ago about recent pop and rock music trends in the Northern Flemish Part of Belgium. Thank God it’s Saturday…

It’s official now, summer’s here even though the weather is still in doubt or rather in denial. They still have to think things over up above before they make up their mind: shall it be summer or do we skip this one for a real long autumn experience? Being self-employed and all I decided to keep on working as long as it keeps raining.

Meanwhile somewhere in between, I’ve planned to go wonderfull Copenhagen next weekend or the weekend after that for 3 or 4 days. It looks like the weather over there is going to be great or at least fine and I’m quite fond right now of the idea of driving there all the way with my own car. It gives me the possibility to visit the outscurts of town as well. There are some really nice parks and green areas in Denmark.

I usually don’t like driving and I try to avoid it as much as possible but sometimes I feel this urge or itch to do some serious ‘driving’. Relaxed cruising like in an American movie. Empty roads, clear horizon… a setting sun and most of all some soothing music on the radio. That's also part of summer. I could provide myself with some custom-made hometapes for hours of relaxed driving and post it here but I don’t have the time for that. I will do with whatever comes my way.

Right now it’s this bunch of crappy tunes that I’ve gathered over the last couple of weeks and days. I tried to turn it into a real mix with a cheap program I found on the internet for free but when I tried to export it into a mp3 or wav format for posting it added soundsamples every 30 seconds to the mix about registering and buying the program. All this work for nothing, jeeh... Well instead you get the tracks separately but they’re not all equally balanced and some have a poor sound quality. That’s what I tried to restore and amplify or adapt with some phasing, effects and stuff in that mix I made. Maybe some other time.

Im’ posting this stuff now through mediafire because my Box account is hitting the ceiling. I have to become really cautious about what tunes I upload to it. I think I will upload only the best or most wanted tracks after a while.

Gary Wilson

I’ve posted a video from Gary Wilson a while ago and as a result I’m totally turning onto Gary Wilson right now. I first heard about him and his music on the Stones throw samplers Chrome Children. I found out that he already made an album in the 70’s but as it turned out, back then he was someone for whom they coined the term ‘ahead of their time’. A short article from All Music Guide sums it up.

The brain-damaged electro-funk of Gary Wilson was new wave when the label was still mainly used to categorize punk acts with a sweet tooth for pop. Completely ahead of his time, Wilson used chilly synthesizers and bizarre sound effects and samples to tell his odd tales of love and sex. In 1977, Wilson recorded his debut LP You Think You Really Know Me in the basement of his parents' house in Endicott, NY. Home tapings started becoming prevalent in the '90s, but in the late '70s, Wilson was an indie pioneer, releasing a strange lo-fi record that eventually influenced Beck. Moreover, the LP inspired Olympia, WA, college radio station KAOS to spin underground artists, helping to cultivate a taste for non-commercial music that later gave birth to K Records and Sub Pop. Legendary Seattle DJ Stephen Rabow even presented one of Wilson's gigs in the early '80s.
Wilson toured with his group, the Blind Dates, at times covering their bodies on-stage with flour. But the masses were not ready for Wilson's eccentricities.
Wilson did not release a follow-up to You Think You Really Know Me; nevertheless, the album's cult status grew as years passed. Finally, in 2003, Motel Records released Forgetten Lovers, a follow-up album of sorts assembled from Wilson's previously unreleased material, rarities, and vinyl-only pressings from 1973 to 1982, further solidifying Wilson's stance as the unsung hero of indie rock. The new record Mary Had Brown Hair was released in 2004 on Stones Throw.

Heavy Metal

It’s a summer recess right now. All my favorite radio show are on a holiday and are being replaced by live coverage of the music festivals.
So tonight instead of tuning into the radio I’m watching a cheap video from a old cult movie. It’s the greasy animated fantasy gore and slut from Heavy Metal. I’ve watched it before, really a long time ago over at some friends house but because of the recent Southpark tribute to this 1981 movie, I decided to give it another go. I found an online copy of it. The soundtrack is pretty ok. I really like the theme song. I’ve got two versions of it. The soundtrack version by Sammy Hagar and a version by Don Felder from the Eagles. They’re both from 1981 so I can’t figure out which one’s the original and which is the remake. They’re both quite distinctly different so I’m posting both of them.

I’m pretty awfull tired right now. I had hardly any sleep for three days. Luckily I rarely drink coffee so Black Gold kept me going. Certainly today at work. Now I can finally go to bed but first this post.
There was too much fun going on this weekend… concerts, Fiesta Latina’s, Richie Hawtin, Murga parades and Samba schools were coloring the city streets and nights. I also had the chance to get me some free and fun one-to-one salsa lessons from a dear friend. It turned out to be as hard I thought it would be. It’s difficult for me to stay centered. It still feels like putting a step back. I have to focus on the basic moves when all I long to do is improvise. It's called dancing together and paying attention. It’s clear though that I need lessons if I want to get into it. Or maybe I should take up tango instead but in that case I will probably have to face the same problems.

Every once in a while I fall in love with my radio. I heard this fabulous song sleep drunk while driving my car (no go, I know but sometimes I have no other choice). It’s from an great almost forgotten band from the 80’s, The Blue Nile.
The funny thing was that I had the album from which the track was pulled from. It’s one of many records that I took from the library and copied on tape when I was in college but hardly gave a look in the years afterwards. Maybe I was just not ready for it. Hearing it back today it’s incredible how fresh and up to date A Walk Across The Rooftops from 1983 sounds. Tracks like Tinseltown In The Rain and Stay are genuine pop songs but have them haunting dance oriented pulsating minimal rhythms that are just a kin to present day disco and just are craving for a remix by the likes of Lindstrøm, Aeroplane, Low Motion Disco,…

Just Do What You Feel… but Do It With Style

You all might have been wondering what was going on lately with these short messages and second hand links? No worry, I was just running short of up/download credit because I’ve been watching to many South Park episodes over the last few weeks, even months. At the end of the month I’m always short on fiberjuice. But I’m almost there. I’m entering season 10 now from 2006 and the credit counter’s back to zero.
I must say, the joke isn’t still starting to wear thin in contrast with what I expected. I’m as pretty much amused by it as on the first day. There are some weak episodes off course but the general appreciation is still A OK.

So what’s in the bag this time? The usual I’m afraid… I’m still not getting fed up with hearing fine disco music. There’s so much of it and just now I got hold on one of the best but rare and almost forgotten albums of a true master of disco. Webster Lewis is held in high regard by soul, funk and Jazz fans alike, although he never attained the mainstream success he thoroughly deserved. He was born in 1943 but he passed away 6 years ago in 2002 as a result of diabetic complications.
He was a fine pianist, clarinetist and arranger who also toured as a conducter for Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra and worked as a musical director for Herbie Hancock and Gwen McCrea. He’s the one behind the early vintage electro of Welcome Aboard of The Love Unlimited Orchestra.

The album I’ve obtained is one of his amazing late 70's sets for Epic Records called 8 for the 80’s. Lewis and Hancock shared the production credits on this one. It’s full of fabulously orchestrated first rate fusion of funk and disco with a jazzy sensitive edge. Lots of smooth soulful vocals, strings and horns but it never get's cheesy. The up-tempo tracks like Give Me Some Emotion, Fire, Go For It, You Deserve To Dance have sharp edges, rightly cut for the dancefloor. Every track’s a winner even the few ballads like The Love You Give To Me and Heavenly.

I stumbled across this promo video for Save by Kap Bambino just the other day. For one raison or the other I completely forgot all about these guys. I remember finding a copy of this awesome heavily charged bit of high energy on the net and reposted it a long while ago (I think it’s still on in one of those white Boxes on the right) and then I didn’t go after them as I used to do. Stupid me. In the meanwhile I haven’t heard anything about Kap Bambino in the media either. But now I’ve got this to remember me to do so.

Another myspace revelation is this soulful bare naked combo called the Rayees. It’s practically a’cappela but that sure doesn’t prevent them from leaving a lasting impression. Just watch and listen.

Lemme take you by the hand Folks. You really have got to hear this! I found a fresh and tiny Suisse Label with some great Cosmic disco and Electro related dance music over at Innocenti Music.
